November through March, the city empties of everyone but the people who live there. The light goes flat and gray, the kafanas fill up by four, and the whole place softens. That's when we went. That's what we dyed.

01 — Blok

The gray that isn't one gray

Novi Beograd is a hundred concrete towers built in thirty years, and in the rain they go every shade between silver and slate. The Blok tee is dyed to that range — ice over pigment, so the color breaks unevenly, the way weather does.

We got the pigment wrong four times. The gray kept coming out clean, and nothing about those towers is clean. The batch that worked was the one we mixed on a day it actually rained.

02 — Rakija

Plum brandy, worn as a shirt

Every household has a bottle and an opinion. The long-sleeve takes its color from šljivovica held up to a window — a plum-rose that shifts darker at the seams where the dye pooled.

Somebody's grandfather poured us three of them before noon and would not discuss the weather until we finished. The color in the glass changed with the window light. We photographed it eleven times.

03 — Kafana

The amber hour

A kafana at four in the afternoon is tungsten bulbs, wood paneling, and nobody in a hurry. The crew is dyed to that light. It's the piece people ask about.
